Westminster drop-in: MPs hear how modern stoves support low-carbon, resilient home heating

In early November, MPs from across the UK attended a parliamentary drop-in at Portcullis House hosted by the Stove Industry Association (SIA) to learn how modern, Ecodesign-compliant wood-burning stoves can support a low-carbon, resilient heating mix for Britain’s homes. The session was sponsored by Steve Race MP (Exeter) and attracted cross-party interest, with 11 MPs attending alongside officials from Defra’s Air Quality and Domestic Emissions Team.

What was discussed

•Clear role for modern stoves: MPs heard how today’s stoves provide affordable, low-carbon, grid-resilient secondary heat that helps households during peak demand, power cuts and in rural or off-gas areas.

•A UK supply chain: The event showcased a broad home-grown sector, from manufacturers and test labs to installers, sweeps, retailers, fuel suppliers and local forestry businesses.

•Policy clarity: Steve Race MP highlighted the need for decisions that distinguish modern stove technology from older appliances and open fires as government shapes future heat pathways and air-quality targets.

Why this matters

Modern stoves, used well, belong in a balanced heating mix. They combine high efficiency and low emissions with real world resilience. For many homes they provide controllable, local heat that works alongside heat pumps, solar and better insulation. Put simply, when policy backs the best technology and good practice, homes stay warmer, cleaner and more resilient.

Our commitment

At Charnwood we continue to develop wood-stove technology that improves upon current Ecodesign and clearSkies standards, and to support best practice with dry fuel and correct operation. For the simplest experience, our Aire Intelligent models use iBlu control to optimise combustion automatically, helping users enjoy a steady flame, clear glass and excellent fuel economy.
