After several buoyant years, 2024 was undeniably challenging, however several factors including new legislation and an uptick in stove orders leave the industry optimistic about the winter season ahead. A return to common sense – three rulings that changed the conversation

The first quarter of 2025 delivered a welcome reality-check for the wood-burning debate:

•The Ministry of Housing confirmed that modern stoves will remain a permitted secondary heater in new homes, provided they meet Ecodesign and clearSkies criteria – ending speculation about an outright ban and giving self-builders genuine low-carbon choice.

•“Cosy Killer” campaign – Advertising Standards Authority issued Brighton & Hove City Council an advice notice over its Ad campaign linking stoves to “1 in 20 deaths”. The ASA agreed the statistics were unsubstantiated. Scare-mongering headlines are now starting to get the pushback they warrant.

•After a rural backlash, the Scottish Parliament amended its regulations so that wood-burning stoves can be fitted in new homes, recognising the resilience they offer island and off-grid communities. 

With legislators north and south of the border and the UK’s ad watchdog all acknowledging the role of modern wood burners, they are starting to receive the credit they deserve for their key role in UK’s low-carbon, energy-secure future. Read more here.
